Wildfire Risk Assessments

A wildfire risk assessment evaluates the conditions around a home that influence how it may respond to wildfire exposure and ember ignition.

What an Assessment Includes

Assessments typically involve a brief site visit during which conditions around the home are reviewed and practical recommendations are discussed with the owner. Depending on the level of service selected, recommendations may be provided during the visit or summarized afterward.

During the visit, we evaluate the conditions most likely to influence how a home responds to wildfire exposure.  This includes:
• vegetation structure, fuel continuity, and flammability of landscape plants
• spacing and arrangement of trees and shrubs
• proximity of combustible materials to structures
• potential ember pathways around the home
• slope, wind exposure, and surrounding fuels

As a landscape architect, Kevin evaluates these factors not only for hazard reduction but also for how they can be improved through thoughtful landscape design and long-term management, informed by his ongoing research into regional plant flammability. The result is a set of prioritized, site-specific recommendations that help property owners focus on the actions most likely to reduce ignition risk while preserving the function and character of the landscape.

A Practical Approach to Defensible Space

Defensible space guidance can be difficult to apply in established neighborhoods where homes are close together and landscapes are valued by their owners.

Radiant Studio focuses on practical strategies that reduce risk while maintaining functional and attractive landscapes. In many cases, modest adjustments to vegetation arrangement, spacing, and maintenance can significantly reduce ignition risk without removing the landscape entirely.

If desired by the owner, landscape architecture and ecological design services are available separately through Verdant Studio, a Confluent Design practice.

Wildfire risk assessments are available throughout Northern Colorado. Contact Radiant Studio to schedule a site visit or discuss whether an assessment would be helpful for your property.
