Radiant Studio
Wildfire Risk Assessment & Defensible Space Consulting

Practical wildfire risk guidance for homeowners and communities in fire-prone landscapes.

Radiant Studio continues the wildfire mitigation work previously offered through Firewise Design, now integrated into the Confluent Design family of practices.

Introduction

Wildfire risk across the West is increasing, but meaningful risk reduction is possible through informed decisions about vegetation, materials, and site conditions around the home.

Radiant Studio provides wildfire risk assessments and defensible-space consulting for homeowners, communities, and land managers. The goal is not to eliminate vegetation or create barren landscapes, but to identify the conditions that most influence ignition risk and provide practical strategies for reducing wildfire risk.

We bring a landscape architect’s perspective to wildfire mitigation, evaluating how vegetation patterns, topography, site layout, and long-term landscape management shape wildfire behavior around the home.

Every property is different. Radiant Studio focuses on site-specific evaluation rather than one-size-fits-all guidance, helping clients prioritize the actions that will have the greatest impact.

Radiant Studio works primarily in northern Colorado and the central Front Range, with services available throughout the Rocky Mountain region.

Services

Radiant Studio provides consulting services focused on wildfire risk and home ignition potential.
Services include:
• wildfire risk assessments
• home ignition zone evaluations
• defensible space planning
• vegetation and fuel condition analysis
• mitigation guidance and prioritization
• written assessment reports for property owners or HOAs
These services are advisory in nature and do not include landscape design or construction documentation.

Selected Work

Residential Wildfire Assessment – Larimer County

An assessment in the Horsetooth foothills evaluated wildfire risk for a home on a ridgeline within a mosaic of grasslands, shrublands, and scattered trees typical of Colorado’s lower montane landscape. The review examined the structure, surrounding vegetation, topography, and neighborhood context to identify potential ignition pathways.

Recommendations addressed building features (including vents, soffits, and decks) and landscape conditions such as shrub density, vegetation near structures, and fuel continuity on steep slopes below the home. The resulting report provided prioritized mitigation actions to reduce wildfire risk while maintaining the character of the landscape.

Residential Wildfire Assessment – Larimer County
An assessment evaluated wildfire risk for a rural home on a 35-acre property along the foothills of southern Larimer County. The home sits mid-slope within shrublands dominated by mountain mahogany and native grasses, exposed to strong winds common along the Front Range hogbacks.

The review examined building features, surrounding landscaping, and broader site conditions to identify potential ignition pathways. Recommendations addressed ember-resistant construction details, maintenance of defensible space around the home and garage, and targeted vegetation management within the surrounding shrublands to reduce potential flame spread and ember production.

Community Wildfire Mitigation – Larimer County

A neighborhood wildfire mitigation effort brought together residents of a subdivision in the wildland-urban interface west of Fort Collins. Supported by grants from the Larimer County Office of Emergency Management, the program combined homeowner outreach, educational workshops, and coordinated fuels disposal.

In its first year, more than half of the subdivision’s households participated, removing approximately 240 cubic yards of vegetation and other combustible materials. The effort demonstrated how coordinated neighborhood action can meaningfully reduce wildfire risk.

Plant Flammability Research

Picture
Conversations with homeowners often reveal uncertainty about what vegetation can be safely planted near homes. Much of the existing guidance focuses on vegetation removal or generalized plant lists, with limited attention to how landscape design, plant structure, seasonal moisture, and maintenance influence wildfire behavior.

To better understand these variables, Confluent Design is conducting ongoing testing, evaluating the seasonal flammability of landscape plants commonly used in the Rocky Mountain region. Results from this work inform public education, presentations, and future design guidance.

Education and Outreach

Kevin regularly presents on fire-adapted landscapes, defensible space design, and plant flammability research for professional conferences, community groups, and horticultural organizations. These talks focus on practical strategies for reducing ignition risk while maintaining functional, ecologically appropriate landscapes.

Practice Structure

Radiant Studio provides wildfire risk assessments and defensible-space consulting.

Landscape architecture and ecological design services are provided separately through Verdant Studio, a Confluent Design practice.
