Denver Mountain Parks – Trail Assessments and Ecological Restoration
Red Rocks, O’Fallon, Corwina, Pence, and Bergen Peak Parks, Colorado
5 mountain parks • 40 miles of inventoried trails • restoration planning and trail system management
Confluent Design conducted trail system assessments and restoration planning for several parks within the historic Denver Mountain Parks system, including Red Rocks Park and the O’Fallon/Corwina/Pence Park complex. Decades of heavy visitor use had resulted in extensive development of unauthorized social trails and associated erosion and habitat damage. At Red Rocks alone, more than 18 miles of trails existed, over 85% of which were unplanned routes.
Confluent Design first inventoried and assessed the natural-surface trail network at Red Rocks and developed recommendations for trail closures, improvements, and habitat restoration to guide future funding and stewardship efforts.
Working with Biohabitats, Confluent Design expanded this work to O’Fallon, Corwina, Pence, and Bergen Peak, updating the City’s trails geodatabase and preparing a trail master plan identifying repairs, reroutes, and closures. Volunteer and Youth Corps projects were subsequently organized to implement these recommendations and restore damaged trails.
